Whole Foods vs Supplements: Finding the Balance for Real Wellness

Whole Foods vs Supplements: Finding the Balance for Real Wellness

I’ve been in the wellness space for almost 10 years, and one question keeps coming up:
👉 Shouldn’t food be enough?

The short answer: yes—food first, always.
The longer answer: life doesn’t always make that easy.

🌿 Why Whole Foods Come First

Whole foods don’t just contain nutrients; they carry enzymes, fiber, and synergistic compounds that supplements can’t fully replicate.

My daughter and I mostly eat these food-first immunity builders and it's on heavy rotation in our household:

  • Bone stock (for babies 6mo+) - a quick 2-4 hours in a slow cooker and it makes one of the most important staples for the baby
  • Bone broth (for adults) - Once I finish the baby's stock I use the same meat and bones to make for the adults and add stronger herbs and spices like turmeric
  • Kefir milk & sauerkraut (probiotic powerhouses) - very affordable and while easy to make it can take time
  • Chicken liver pâté (rich in iron & vitamin A) - I honestly felt overwhelmed the first time I saw this in Mathilde's course >> https://www.bebeandmecollective.com/ but it's been rather easy to make and we freeze most of it too.
  • Sourdough bread (gentle on digestion, prebiotic for the gut) - When too busy I make pancakes with my sourdough starter. Though I read somewhere I can put kefir milk on my pancake milk so I'm trying that next!

These foods are a blessing! They heal the gut, feed immunity, and set the long-term foundation for health. I don't think we'll never get sick but I'm investing on our best chances to heal fast if not completely avoid if that makes any sense!

💊 Where Supplements Fit In

Supplements aren’t meant to replace whole foods. They’re bridges for the times when:

  • Kids refuse (again) to eat vegetables 🍃 - it takes a LOOOOOOT of tries to suceed.
  • Work stress and travel get in the way ✈️ - oh yeah, this is a REAL THING!
  • You’re recovering, run down, or need an extra boost 💪 - LIFE SAVING!

But not all supplements are created equal. I’ve seen firsthand how synthetic options (great for affordability and definitely better than nothing) but many can trigger acid reflux, stomach upset, or just pass through without much absorption.

That’s why I only recommend gentle, natural supplements that are food-based, organic where possible, and easy on digestion.

✨ The Supplements I Actually Recommend

When food isn’t enough, here are the gentle supports I trust:

  • Ayo! Organics Liquid Probiotics – tasteless drops for gut balance
  • Ayo! Kids Multivitamin Gummies – kid and adult-friendly nutrition backup
  • Liquid Health Organics Drops - from B Complez to Zinc Options!
  • Mary Ruth’s Liquid Morning Multivitamin – whole-body daily support
  • Liquid Health Ionic Zinc – immunity, skin health and did I say healing? Yep!

These aren’t quick fixes. They’re carefully chosen to complement—not replace—the food-first lifestyle.

🌱 Final Thought: Food Heals, Supplements Support

Supplements can take us very far, but not the farthest we can go.
That final stretch—the part that rebuilds your gut, steadies your mood, and strengthens your family’s immunity—will always come from real food.

But when food isn’t enough, I’m here to give you other options that are natural, gentle, and effective.
